CASEMENTS AFRICA LIMITED HOSTS UVTAB ASSESSMENT BOARD TO SHOWCASE THE GROWTH OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS IN UGANDA
Casements Africa Limited recently had the opportunity to host representatives of the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) for an engagement focused on understanding how industry is contributing to the development of practical, vocational and technical skills in Uganda. The visit provided an opportunity for the assessment team to interact with Casements Africa Limited's technical teams and observe the practical processes involved in aluminium, glass and steel fabrication. With a history dating back to 1965, Casements has developed extensive experience in fabrication, installation, design and finishing, making it an important example of how technical skills can be applied in a real industrial environment. Turning Technical Training into Practical Skills Vocational and technical education is most effective when learners can connect classroom knowledge with real workplace situations. This is one of the areas where industry plays a critical role. At Casements Africa Limited, technical work involves a combination of measurement, design interpretation, material selection, fabrication, assembly, quality control and installation. These activities require workers to develop practical competencies while maintaining professional standards. The company's work in aluminium, glass and steel fabrication provides a practical environment in which technical skills can be developed and strengthened. Casements manufactures and installs a wide range of aluminium products, while also working with architectural glass and various steel products. Building Skills Through Real-World Experience One of the key lessons from the engagement with UVTAB is the importance of learning by doing. Technical professionals do not only need theoretical knowledge. They need the ability to accurately measure, operate equipment, interpret drawings, solve problems, work safely and deliver products that meet required standards. Casements' production process demonstrates this connection between knowledge and practice. The company describes a process that includes site assessment, production, factory dry-fitting or "snug work," installation and final quality checks. Such processes expose technical personnel to different stages of a project and help strengthen their practical competencies. Supporting Uganda's Industrial Skills Development Uganda's growing construction and manufacturing sectors require people with relevant, employable technical skills. Companies such as Casements Africa Limited contribute to this development by providing an industrial environment where craftsmanship, engineering principles, precision and workplace professionalism are put into practice. The company's projects—including work involving aluminium doors and windows, curtain walling, ACP cladding, steel structures and glass solutions—illustrate the range of technical competencies required within the modern construction and fabrication industry. These competencies are increasingly important as Uganda continues to pursue industrialisation, employment creation and the development of a productive workforce. Industry and UVTAB: Connecting Skills to the World of Work The visit also highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry and the national TVET assessment system. UVTAB is responsible for assessing and certifying competencies acquired through both formal and informal Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Its mandate also includes the development and management of TVET curricula and training packages. The Board's stated mission is to develop employer-led TVET curricula and conduct competence-based assessment and certification for the world of work. This makes industry engagement particularly important. Employers understand the practical skills, technologies and standards required in the workplace. Their experiences can help ensure that vocational and technical training remains relevant to the needs of Uganda's economy. A Culture of Quality and Continuous Improvement For technical skills to have lasting value, they must be accompanied by a strong culture of quality. Casements Africa Limited says that it prioritises quality and uses customer feedback and satisfaction surveys as part of its continual improvement efforts. The company also emphasises precision throughout its production and installation processes. Such practices reinforce an important message for Uganda's vocational learners: technical competence is not simply about completing a task; it is about completing it safely, accurately, professionally and to an acceptable standard. Investing in the Future of Uganda's Workforce The engagement between Casements Africa Limited and UVTAB demonstrates the value of bringing education, assessment and industry closer together. As Uganda strengthens its TVET system, workplaces can play a significant role in exposing learners and technical professionals to modern equipment, production methods, quality standards and real-world challenges. At the same time, assessment bodies such as UVTAB can help ensure that the skills demonstrated by workers and learners are assessed and recognised through credible national systems. For Casements Africa Limited, the engagement represents more than a visit. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how decades of practical experience in Uganda's fabrication industry can contribute to the country's broader conversation about employable skills and workforce development. Looking Ahead The future of Uganda's technical and vocational sector depends on strong partnerships among training institutions, assessment bodies and employers. Casements Africa Limited's experience in aluminium, glass and steel fabrication provides a practical illustration of how industry can contribute to developing a workforce equipped with hands-on skills, professionalism and an understanding of real workplace demands. As UVTAB continues its mandate of building a credible, competence-based national assessment and certification system, engagements with companies such as Casements Africa Limited can help strengthen the connection between what people learn, what they can demonstrate and what the world of work requires. Casements Africa Limited remains proud to be part of Uganda's journey toward a skilled, productive and competitive workforce.
